The Essential Hiker

The 10 Essentials are a collection of items recommended by New Hampshire Fish & Game for summer outings.  It consists of the following and can be modified for seasonal requirements:

-Map                      -Compass                           -Headlamp                         -Warm Clothing

-Warm Hat           -Means to start a fire      -First Aid kit                       -Whistle

-Rain Gear             -Knife

The unexpected can always happen.  Even if you have the hikeSafe card and the 10 Essentials, are you prepared to deal with an unplanned hardship in the White Mountains?  This class is for hikers who would like to better understand the gear they are advised to bring on every outing.  You will learn about using a map and compass and how to navigate in the wilderness.  We will discuss clothing and how it relates to our shelter system, fire lighting and how to stay warm in the White Mountains, first aid and how to treat common injuries, and finally, when to get help and when to self-rescue.

The final exercise will be a simulated emergency where the students will put their skills to use below tree line in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.  With safety precautions in place, the emphasis will be on self-knowledge, self-reliance, and self-rescue.
